CLASSES

CREATIVE MOVEMENT (Age 3 – 30 min Class):  This 8 week sessional class will allow children to explore movement through music, promote creativity, encourage imagination and develop coordination.  There will be one session before Christmas and one in the new year.

COMBINATION CLASS (Age 4/5 – 30/45 min Class):   Students are now ready for simple coordinated combinations of steps and movements.  The class consists of music appreciation, basic movement, body awareness, flexibility and technique in both ballet and jazz.  Class attire:  Girls: Pink ballet slippers, a bodysuit and tights, Boys: Black slippers, shorts and a t-shirt.

TECHNIQUE/EXAM CLASS: (Generally Age 9+) Offered to those students dedicated to improving their dancing technique.  Students will learn a set syllabus of steps and combinations and must perfect it to the best of their ability.  At the instructor’s discretion, students will take their exam in the fall or spring session of exams.  Students will receive (2) two, 45-60 minutes classes each week – one being their exam work class, the other being the general class.  The exam work class will be held from September until the exam date.  Class attire:  black bodysuit, tights and proper shoes. 

All students of the Dance Centre are encouraged to participate in a ballet class.  Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms.  The teaching staff feel that enrollment in ballet class aids in the development of proper technique, the standard required to become a well rounded student, and strength required for injury prevention.  Students must be enrolled in ballet to be eligible for competition solos/duets and the examination program.

General Tap: (Age 5+ - 30-45 min Class) Students will receive instruction in coordinated tap technique, music appreciation and rhythm.  Class attire: (age 5-9) Black tap shoes, a black bodysuit and tights; (age 10+) Beige Cuban-heel tap shoes, a black bodysuit and beige tights.  Fitted dance shorts or skirts may be worn over the bodysuit.  Boys:  Black tap shoe, t-shirt, pants or shorts.

General Jazz: (Age 6+ - 45-60 min Class) Instruction is given in all aspects of jazz dance including flexibility, technique, isolation work, travelling steps, and routine construction.  Class attire: (age 6-9) black slip-on jazz shoes, a black bodysuit and tights; (age 10+) beige slip-on jazz shoes, a black bodysuit and beige tights.  Fitted dance shorts may be worn over the bodysuit.  – NO PANTS PLEASE!!  Boys:  Black jazz shoes, t-shirt, pants or shorts.

General Ballet: (Age 6+ - 45-75 min Class)  Class includes barre work, centre floor, allegro, all aspects of ballet technique, routine construction and music appreciation.  Class attire:  pink ballet slippers, a black bodysuit and ballet pink tights.  Skirts may be worn over the bodysuit.  Boys:  black slippers, t-shirt and shorts

Pointe:  For Intermediate/Senior ballet students.  Upon instructor’s advice, students will be given the opportunity to partake in pointe class once a week.  Must also be enrolled in general ballet class.  Class Attire:  Pointe Shoes, a black bodysuit and ballet pink tights.

Lyrical:  Intermediate/Senior students may be given the opportunity to partake in lyrical class once a week.  Class will consist of lyrical and contemporary styles.  Must also be enrolled in ballet and jazz.

Hip Hop:  Age 9 and over – a 30 – 45 minutes class once a week.  Class consists of hip hop dance steps.  No previous dance experience required.  Boys Only Classes will be offered if there is sufficient enrolment.  Class Attire:  NO JEANS PLEASE!!  Clean sneakers or hip hop shoes, comfortable clothing to allow for large movements.

All classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis, please register early to ensure your spot.  If the minimum number of students registered in a class is not met, the class will be cancelled.  If the maximum is reached, your name will be placed on a waiting list and if there are enough, a second class will be offered.
